Battle: Los Angeles Theater or Renter?

Battle: Los Angeles is hitting the theaters 3-11-11 and thus begs the question: Theater? Renter? or don’t even care?

Before answering that we should address our expectations.  This is an alien invasion style movie this means that I don’t expect to find a thoughtful story, epic dialogue or deep characters those things are a bonus with this type of movie.

What I do expect to find is

  • Action lots of action
  • Explosions, I said lots of action including explosions so many to make Michael Bay proud.
  • Cool aliens, they should at lest visually be stunning.
  • Cool alien tech preferably attached to the action and mecha / giant killer robots a plus.
  • A fun movie

With this in mind check out the trailer below.

This movie promises lots of action, explosions, cool aliens, cool alien tech and even giant killer robots!  Not only does it have that but this is a well put together trailer which is hopefully a sign of the quality of the move to proceed.  The music is provocative and the tension is exciting.

Definitely a theater for me!

Plot / Story

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world - Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine Staff Sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.  (Wikipedia)(official site

Rules of the Game: Watch the trailers. Rate the Trailer. Then share with us your comments: does the movie, it’s trailer and buzz make you want to watch it in the theater, rent it, or not interested at all, and why?

However, he meets three super small orphan girls who want him to become their dad. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Renter:  At first I was excited about this Despicable Me but the trailers got old fast.  There are also several yellow flags with this project that make me cautious about watching this film.  Steve Carell is funny I really like him in the office but I have not cared for his other projects, universal studios animation project which tend to be ok and the incessant need to use 3d as a gimmick to force me into watching it in the theater and I can wait.

Theater:  I'm an old school fan of the Predator movies Exploring: Predators Trailer not so much of a fan of all the recent attempts at reboots.  That said this one looks descent they kept the jungle feel.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice:

Release Date:  July 16

Listed as:  Sorcery, Fantasy, Adventure , Comedy film

Not Interested:  This project spits on the memory of Walt Disney.  He loved Fantasia, cherished it as his greatest achievement of merging music and visuals.  To turn part of it into a simple movie with cheep tricks and borrowed plot line from other contemporary movies is a horrible thing and I want no part of it.

Inception:

Release Date:  JULY 16th

Listed as:  sci-fi, action, thriller

Studio:  Warner Bros. Pictures

Director:  Christopher Nolan

Produced by:  Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas

Cobb's rare ability has made him valuable in corporate espionage. In one last job, he must cause an "inception" – instead of stealing an idea, he must plant one. Christopher Nolan, the director of the movie, was quoted as saying "We don't do magic. Everything in Inception has a basis in reality, except for the technology".  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Not Interested:  Premise is weak, the trailer boring and worst yet Christopher Nolan is all over this project.  He is a big red flag in any project.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore:

Release Date:  JULY 30

Listed as: Family, Fantasy

Studio:  Warner Bros. Pictures

Director:  Brad Peyton

Produced by:  Polly Cohen, Andrew Lazar, Greg Michael, Brent O'Connor

Diggs, a police dog, and his mentor, Butch, are selected by the Dogs HQ spy force to stop her. The cats join forces with with the dogs and get additional support from the birds to block Galore's scheme. Galore, meanwhile, has the help of the mice and hires the devious cat and antagonist from the first film, Mr. Tinkles.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Theater / Renter:  this is probably a renter for me but as previously confessed in My Dirty Secret Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore I'm a sucker for this movie.  The first in the series was really entertaining and funny.  Based on the trailers and promotional materials it looks like the second one has not lost that flavor.

Theater or Renter: June 2010

Theater or Renter: June 2010 includes 6 SF movies Marmaduke, Splice, The A-Team, The Karate Kid, Toy Story 3, Jonah Hex.  Will we watch? Will we rent? or do we even care?

Rules of the Game: Watch the trailers. Rate the Trailer. Then share with us your comments: does the movie, it’s trailer and buzz make you want to watch it in the theater, rent it, or not interested at all, and why?

Marmaduke:

Release Date:  June 4th 2010

Listed as:  Fantasy, Family

Studio:  20th Century Fox

Director:  Tom Dey

Stars:  Owen Wilson, George Lopez, Fergie, Kiefer Sutherland

The Plot / Story: Based on the comic strip of the same name by Brad Anderson.  The Winslow family moves from the country to Orange County, California and has to adjust to the new environment.  This is particularly difficult for the lovable yet awkwardly large Marmaduke, who tends to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way.(Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

Marmaduke is a renter at best for me.

Positive

It has a good cast.  The trailer made me laugh at times.

Negative

I have concerns that it may be more kidsey then a family movie.  All of the early promotion materials gave me the impression this movie is more fluff.

Splice:

Release Date:  June 4th 2010

Listed as:  Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller

Studio:  Dark Castle Entertainment via Warner Bros. Pictures

First Impressions:

Probably theater definitely renter.

Positive

Guillermo Del Toro.  Premiered at Sitges Film Festival winning Best Special Effects and Best film.  Also had a showing at Sundance and was then fought over by several studios in a bidding war to get distribution rights.  The trailer looks very interesting.  and Guillermo Del Toro.

The A-Team:

Stars:  Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson, Sharlto Copley, Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, Brian Bloom

The Plot / Story: (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

I'm on the fence if this will be a theater or a renter for me.  This is a niche movie that will probably have a limited appeal with the chance of also attracting the action movie going audiences.  I grew up watching A-Team on TV.  I loved what they stood for:  justice and helping those in need.  I can only hope those elements are in the movie.

Positive

The casting looks the part.  Trailer impressed me, it looked good and has a very A-Team feel to it.  Derek Haas did a good job with wanted so hopefully he brings some of those elements to this project.

Negative

Initially I thought a movie of this was a bad idea but after watching the trailer that has changed.  The Loosers was so disappointing that it has left great concerns for the A-Team which is a similar style of movie.

The Karate Kid:

Release Date:  June 11

Listed as:  Action, Drama, Family

Studio:  Columbia Pictures

Director:  Harald Zwart

Produced by:  Jerry Weintraub, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz

Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

Skeptical of the remake, I have concerns that those values from the original will not be maintained.  I may have to wait for early reviews before I can make a decision on whether I will even watch it.

Positive

Loved the original film.

Negative

Concerns over how they will keep some of the spirit of the original film due to some of the fundamental changes.

Toy Story 3:

First Impressions:

Theater

Positive

Really enjoyed the previous 2 Toy Story Movies.  The cast is stellar.   Trailer looks good.

Jonah Hex:

Release Date:  June 18

Listed as: Superhero, Westeren

Studio:  Legendary Pictures, DC Entertainment

Director:  Jimmy Hayward

Produced by:  Akiva Goldsman, Andrew Lazar

The Plot / Story: Jonah Hex is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone... and anything. Having survived death, Jonah's violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the "other side." His only human connection is with Leila, whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. But Jonah's past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military makes him an offer he can't refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop the dangerous villian Quentin Turnbull. But Turnbull, who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell, is also Jonah's oldest enemy and will stop at nothing until Jonah is dead.(Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

On the fence between theater and renter.

Positive

John Malkovich a plus.  Superhero movie a plus.  The steamPunk elements borrowed for the film it makes for a more fantasy version of the Wild West but one that I enjoy.

Negative

The trailer was not terribly exciting border lining on the boring.

Theater or Renter: May 2010

Theater or Renter: May 2010 includes five SF movies Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Shrek Forever After, Prince of Persia, Survival of the Dead.  Will we watch? Will we rent? or do we even care?

Rules of the Game: Watch the trailers. Rate the Trailer. Then share with us your comments: does the movie, it’s trailer and buzz make you want to watch it in the theater, rent it, or not interested at all, and why?

Iron Man 2:

Release Date: May 7th

Listed as:  Action, Superhero Film

Studio:  Marvel Studios

Director:  Jon Favreau

Produced by:  Kevin Feige, Avi Arad, Susan Downey

Written by:  Justin Theroux

Stars:  Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson

The Plot / Story: Sequel to Iron Man it's six months latter.  The world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark is the armored Super Hero Iron Man.  Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands.  With Pepper Potts and James "Rhodey" Rohdes at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces, Whiplash and Justin Hammer.(Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

  • Theater:  I will have to watch this in the theater because the first Iron Man Iron Man 2 Trailer #2 was so good.  I have great concerns about this movie based on the Terrence Howard scandal and advertising.  I'm very unhappy with switching Rohdey from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle.  This looks like a repeat of the first movie but with two Iron mans in it and multiple iron mongers as villains.  They even went to the point of making a rival weapons merchant who wants to do Tony Stark in through the business world, hrmmm sounds familiar.  Here is hoping that I am wrong.

Robin Hood:

Release Date: May 14th

Listed as:  Action, Drama, Fantasy

Studio:  Universal Pictures

Director:  Ridley Scott

Produced by: Brian Grazer, Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe

Written by:  Screenplay: Brian Helgeland   Story: Brian Helgeland, Ethan Reiff, Cyrus Voris

Stars:  Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Kevin Durand, Mark Addy, William Hurt, Danny Huston, Max von Sydow

The Plot / Story: It is late 12th century England and Sir Robin Longstride, Earl of Huntington, has returned to his northern English village after fighting in the Third Crusade. Upon arrival, the nobleman and his servant discover the oppression caused by the new Sheriff of Nottingham. Sir Robin uses his intelligence  and military skills to free his home village from tyranny and corruption in England, by taking back what is rightfully his, and by taking back what rightfully is theirs, to restore justice and happiness to England. Robin must also win the affection of the recently widowed Lady Marian while leading his Merry Men of Sherwood Forest to victory and fairness. (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

  • Renter:  This looks like they are just trying desperately to capitalize off of gladiator and I'm not a big fan Russell Crow or his movies.  On the plus side: Cate Blanchett, William Hurt and a movie with sword play in it.  This is probably a renter though if I have time or the early reviews turn out to be good I may switch to Theater.

Shrek Forever After:

Release Date:  May 21

Listed as: Fantasy, Comedy

Studio: DreamWorks Animation

Director:  Mike Mitchell

Produced by:  Gina Shay, Teresa Cheng, Andrew Adamson, Aron Warner, John H. Williams

Written by:  Josh Klausner, Darren Lemke, Ryan Harris

Stars:  Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Walt Dohrn, Julie Andrews, Justin Timberlake

The Plot / Story: After all of his adventures, Shrek has become a domesticated family ogre. Instead of scaring villagers away as he used to, Shrek agrees to autograph pitchforks. Longing for the days when he felt like a "real ogre", Shrek is tricked into signing a pact with the smooth-talking deal maker, Rumpelstiltskin.  After signing the contract, Shrek discovers he has been tricked, and the day Rumpelstiltskin took out of Shrek's life was the day that he was born-meaning that he never existed.  Now, stuck in a twisted alternate version of Far Far Away where he has to gather the gang and fix everything. (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

  • Theater:  I have loved all of the Shrek movies and expect to really enjoy this as well.

Prince of Persia:

Release Date: May 21

Listed as:  action, adventure, fantasy

Studio:  Walt Disney Pictures

Director:  Mike Newell

Produced by:  Jerry Bruckheimer

Written by:  Jordan Mechner, Boaz Yakin

Stars:  Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina

The Plot / Story: Based on the game Prince Of Persia Prince of Persia HD Movie Trailer.  Dastan is a street urchin in 6th century Persia. Adopted by the king as his heir after showing valor in battle in hopes of keeping the king’s two sons from fighting over the throne.  Dastan teams up with Princess Tamina  to rescue the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that controls time, from the hands of the villainous nobleman, Nizam.(Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

  • Theater: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time only caught a passing interest from me.  Movies based on games tend to be a hit and miss venture.  Add to that Disney's involvement and this project had caution written all over it, that is until I watched the trailer above.  I’m now excited about Prince of Persia.  The effects looks good.  I like the use of a broader variety of weaponry especially the more exotic ones.  The trailer does a nice job of setting up the back and forth between Dastan and Princess Tamina, even if a bit cliche.

Survival of the Dead:

Release Date:  May 21

Listed as:  Zombie movie

Studio: Independent Production

Director:  George A. Romero

Produced by:  Paula Devonshire

Written by:  George A. Romero

Stars:  Alan van Sprang, Kenneth Welsh, Kathleen Munroe, Athena Karkanis

The Plot / Story: It's a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living. Plum Island is a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie apocalypse. Over time the two clans become sharply divided: The O'Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept "alive" until a cure is found. Added unto this situation wander a small group of National Guard soldiers who, after robbing the protagonists of the previous film, have decided to strike out on their own in an effort to survive.  Survival of the Dead follows the thieving National Guardsmen characters who briefly appeared in Diary of the Dead.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

  • Renter:  working against this movie is that it's a zombie flick which has been done to undead and like the creatures they feature just won't go away and give me a rest.  That said it's a George A. Romero movie, this is a huge plus.  Romero created the zombie genera and the best zombie movies.  This may be enough to move this movie to theater status and at least makes it a renter.

Theater or Renter: Arpil 2010

Theater or Renter: April includes five SF movies Clash of the Titans, Date Night, Kick-Ass, The Losers, A Nightmare on Elm Street.  Will we watch? Will we rent? or do we even care?

Rules of the Game: Watch the trailers. Rate the Trailer. Then share with us your comments: does the movie, it’s trailer and buzz make you want to watch it in the theater, rent it, or not interested at all, and why?

Clash of the Titans:

Release Date: April 1

Listed as:  epic fantasy

Studio:  Legendary Pictures

Director:  Louis Leterrier

.  Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus is helpless to save his family from Hades.  With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat the Kraken and then get revenge on Hades.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Theater: Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades will be awesome.  I loved the original Clash of the Titans and have hopes that this one will be an epic like the first.  They even have a budget to make the effects look great but the trailers haven’t supported the hope.

More Clash of the Titans on dashPunk

Date Night:

Release Date:  APRIL 9th

Listed as:  Comedy

Studio:  20th Century Fox

Director:  Shawn Levy

Produced by:  Shawn Levy, Tom McNulty

Written by:  Josh Klausner

Stars:  Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, Common, Ray Liotta, Taraji P. Henson, Leighton Meester

The Plot / Story: Claire and Phil Foster (Tina Fey and Steve Carell) are a suburban couple slogging through their daily lives and marriage. Even their "date nights" of dinner and a movie have become routine. To reignite the marital spark, they visit a trendy Manhattan bistro, where a case of mistaken identity hurtles them through the city at breakneck speeds, into non-stop adventure. Remembering what made them so special together, Phil and Claire take on a couple of corrupt cops, a top-level mobster—and a crazed cabbie—as their date becomes a night they'll never forget.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Between Theater Renter:  Date night will be a theater if I have time to catch it in the theater otherwise it is a renter.  The idea of Liz Lemon and Michael Scott together makes me laugh so much even if I realize these characters are probably not quite the same.  Tina Fey and Steve Carell crack me up so I expect this to be a fun and funny movie.  I'm also curious to see if Date Night is more like Adventures in Babysitting then the typical comedies we find in the theaters today.

Kick-Ass:

Release Date:  APRIL 16th

Listed as:  comic book movie

Studio:  Lionsgate

Director:  Matthew Vaughn

Produced by:  Matthew Vaughn, Brad Pitt, Kris Thykier, Adam Bohling, Tarquin Pack, David Reid

Written by:  Jane Goldman, Matthew Vaughn, Mark Millar

Stars:  Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe moretz, Mark Strong, Nicolas Cage

The Plot / Story: based on the comic book Kick-Ass by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.  a typical teenage boy, wonders why no one has ever decided to become a real-life superhero like the heroes in the comic books.  Despite the fact that he has zero superpowers, he looks to reincarnate himself as a crime-fighting superhero named Kick-Ass.  His decision inspires a subculture of copy cats, put his life in danger, and unite him with a similarly minded father-daughter duo. (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Theater:  the trailers look really funny.  The premise of a regular person stepping up for what is right and inspiring others to take his lead is also a plus.

The Losers:

Release Date:  APRIL 23rd

Listed as: action based on comic

Studio:  Warner Bros.

Director:  Sylvain White

Produced by:  Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman, Kerry Foster

Written by:  Peter Berg, James Vanderbilt

Stars:  Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Óscar Jaenada, Jason Patric

The Plot / Story: An adaptation of Vertigo and DC Comics' comic book series The Losers. Five members of an elite United States Special Forces team are sent into the Bolivian jungle. The team find themselves the target of a betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Believed to be dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they're joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with her own agenda.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Between Theater Renter:  I lovingly think of this movie as the B-Team copy of the A-Team m0vie.  The story and even characters are similar.  That said The Loosers trailer did make me laugh more which hurts a little to say as a fan of the A-Team.  I don't have big expectations for the film but from the trailer it looks fun so if I'm not able to catch it in the theater I will put it on the rent list.

A Nightmare on Elm Street:

Release Date:  APRIL 30th

Listed as:  Slasher, Horror, Reboot

Studio:  New Line Cinema

Director:  Samuel Bayer

Produced by:  Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller

Written by:  Wesley Strick, Eric Heisserer

Stars:  Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz

The Plot / Story: A reboot of the 1980’s movie Nightmare on Elm Street.  A group of parents hunt down and murder a local stalker.  The children of the suburban parents are being haunted in their dreams by a horribly disfigured killer known as Freddy Krueger.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Theater:  I'm a big fan of Nightmare on Elm Street and in it's case a reboot makes more sense because Freddy was finally defeated in six.  I am concerned about my reactions to a non Robert Englund Freddy but the trailers look really good.

The Plot / Story: This movie is a continuation of Alice’s adventures picking up 10 years after she has left Wonderland and forgotten the earlier visit.  She returns and learns that she must help the inhabitants to slay the Jabberwocky, the dragon who terrorizes the inhabitants of Wonderland under the rule of the Red Queen. (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Comment:  Under Tim Burton’s direction I expect Alice in Wonderland to be a dark and strange trip down the rabbit hole.  The music should also be very good under Danny Elfman's direction.  The cast involved in the project is stellar though there is concern over Jonny Depp’s Mad Hatter coming across more like his Captain Jack character.  The problem I've had so far is how some of the characters look from the posters and trailers, especially the Cheshire Cat who is my favorite character.  I expect some of this is due to Disney's push to make this a 3D movie.  The pros outweigh the con's so Alice in Wonderland is still a theater for me.

Repo Men:

Release Date: MARCH 19th

Listed as:  science fiction, action, thriller

Studio:  Universal Pictures

Director:  Miguel Sapochnik

Produced by:  Scott Stuber

Written by:  Eric Garcia, Garrett Lerner

Stars:  Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Liev Schrieber, Alice Braga, Carice van Houten, Chandler Canterbury

The Plot / Story: In a future where artificial organs are readily available for purchase, just don’t default or they will repo them.  One of the best repo men finds himself outfitted with a new heart, then forced to go on the run when he falls on hard financial times.  Based on a novel by Eric Garcia of the same name. (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Comment:  The what if sets this movie in a world that I don't want any part of and believe we would never have, though with our nation moving towards fascism it may not be as far off.  It also fails to be pitch it's self as a warning tale.  The trailer bored me.  I like Jude Law and Forest Whitaker but it's just not enough putting Repo Men into the Not Interested category.

Update: I still hold fast to my opinion about Repo Men but Bob the Elementalist, Eric and I did get into a fun conversation on genetic manipulation during witch we realized there could, with our current laws, be a situation where the genetic additions to a person would be copy written by the corporation and they could end up repossessing those additions.

Comment:  The movie has an interesting premise but I'm concerned that it may be too kidsy and not a family movie.  I'm still having difficulty with the look of the dragons which I hope will be fixed once I'm fully into the movie and watching it on a big screen rather then just getting little glimpses from a trailer.   How to Train Your Dragon is still on the fence between theater and renter though I'm now leaning towards theater.
