Mord'Sith Costume at Shoreleave

DVD Releases: October 13, 2009

Out this week we have three DVDs to feature:  Legend of the Seeker: The Complete First Season, Drag Me to Hell, Land of the Lost.  Do we Love It, Rent it, or Avoid Like Plague?
[reus name="LOTS season1 DVD"]

Love It

Rent It

  • Drag Me to Hell: I'm just not sure about this one.  I like Sam Rami so that is a plus, it got decent reviews another plus and the premise kind of hooks me.  That said I have been tortured by bad movies claiming to be horror for too long and I am concerned that this one might drag the viewer through a tortuous experience (not the good kind) to watch this movie.  Maybe I'm too much of a cowered or have too much suffering in my own life to risk it on this movie. please someone who has watched it clear up this F.U.D. (fear, uncertainty & doubt) and give me a reason to watch this movie.

  • Land of the Lost:  The trailer looks funny which originally peeked my interest.  Will Ferrell is funny but also a hit or miss for me with his movies.  After it got tanked in the reviews I became more cautious about Land of the Lost but I have not given up on the movie because most of the complaints are that it's too cheesy which is exactly what the original show was like.  I may still watch this one but it does not go very high on my rental list.

SF TV Series To Watch This Fall

Ghost Hunters
Image via Wikipedia

With so many Speculative Fiction shows and new shows coming out this fall I thought I could help sort them all out.

Currently Airing

  • Eureka (Syfy):  A fun sci-fi show.  Love it, watch it on Hulu

  • Ghost Hunters (Syfy):  Fascinating exploration of U.S. ghost stories and haunting investigation.  Love it watch it on Hulu

  • Warehouse 13 (Syfy):  A fun sci-fi show that adds a dash of paranormal into it.   Love it, watch it on Hulu

SEPTEMBER 9

  • Glee (FOX):  loved the pilot, a nice feel good musical tale with a dash of fantasy.

  • Destination Truth (Syfy):  Loved the previous seasons can’t wait to see what Josh and the gang get into this season.  Hopefully nothing from Chernobyl bit Josh.

SEPTEMBER 10

  • The Vampire Diaries (CW):  A vampire is in it so I have to check it out but I don’t have much hope.  I realize it is not a Twilight clone (I have been schooled on that subject, lol) yet I can only hope that it is way better then Twilight.

  • Supernatural (CW):  I’m a sucker for a paranormal show involving demon hunters so this is on my check out list because I also realize there are a lot of bad ones out there as well.

SEPTEMBER 22

  • The Forgotten (ABC): I don’t have much hope for this show, mainly I’m concerned this will turn out to be yet another show for people who don’t like sci-fi to watch.

SEPTEMBER 23

  • Eastwick (ABC):  The trailers looks really good, they captured the essence of the movie so well in the promotional material I’m looking forward to watching it.

SEPTEMBER 25

  • Dollhouse (FOX):  Season one rocked!!! A must see

  • Smallville (CW): I could appreciate the concept behind Smallville but until this season just didn’t care enough bout the show to want to watch it but with Callum Blue joining the cast this year I think I may start watching it.

SEPTEMBER 27

  • The Simpsons (FOX):  If you don’t know then I’m at a loss for words.

OCTOBER 2

  • Stargate Universe (Syfy):  I started out not caring much about this show, but as more came out and especially the latest trailers I’m excited to watch it.

  • Clone Wars: Rise of the Bounty Hunters (Cartoon):  Season two of George Lucas' animated Star Wars tales covering the era of the Clone Wars.  The animation style is a unique style that has been difficult for some to get into but worth it.  The story is really good though lighter because the show is marketed more towards a kid audience I have hope that the second season will get better.

OCTOBER 9

  • Ugly Betty (ABC):  What an amazing retelling of the classic fantasy tale

  • Sanctuary (Syfy):  The original web series was good.  The first season was awesome so of course I’m looking forward to season two.

NOVEMBER 3

  • V (ABC):  I enjoyed growing up with the original show V and it is one that could use a retelling, plus Morena Baccarin.

November 7

  • Legend of the Seeker (syndication):  Season one was so good I can’t wait to see how season two unfolds.

I find it interesting that all of the speculative fiction programming out there are on either sy-fy, Fox, CW, or ABC.

WFR: Swatting Flies, Lessons From a Seeker

Throughout one's life there arises nuisances that annoy and antagonize us like a fly at the dinner table.  The instinct is to swat that annoyance, rid it from our lives and return to whatever it is we are working on.  Though that is our instinct and the most immediate satisfying action, are there times when we should bear the annoyance and not swat the fly?

I love the scene in the book Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind when Richard and Kahlen are faced with the temptation to swat the Blood flies that were annoying them.  In this instance the annoyance was not only buzzing about them but they were even stinging and biting them.  The real danger they were in was if they attacked the small annoyance they would have gained the attention of a very dangerous and lethal predator a long tail Gar.

This scene is a great metaphor for our own lives and gives us the answer to the question: are there times when we should bear the annoyance and not swat the fly?  The lesson here is it's sometimes wiser to tolerate the small annoyances because attacking the small stuff can make a situation much worse then it already is.  In other words as I'm told often "Don't sweat the small stuff."

There are many real life examples of when people should not have swatted at their small annoyances and because they did they ended up in much bigger trouble.  Watch politics for a moment and the examples flow.  Take for example the young couple on a date who couldn't leave the fly alone and ended up spilling their drink over their plate and nice outfit, not to mention the embarrassment.   For me, recently, I lost an afternoon because I could not leave the small plumbing annoyance alone and because I messed with it I made a situation that was ignorable into a bigger situation that had to be fixed.

The next time you are faced with an annoyance, endure for at least a moment and seek the truth behind the situation.  Discern and ask yourself if I go after that small annoyance will it make the situation worse.  If not then swat away but heed the Seeker's warning for if you swing at the wrong one a long tail Gar might just be waiting for you.

Get your copy of Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind here and enjoy.

Sephiroth/Aerith Tribute- "The Mourning Tree"

I found this video by accident while looking for a video of the Leaves' Eyes song "Mourning Tree" to share on a forum.

This is one of my favorite songs, and I have always been surprised that more videos haven't been made using it.  I would love to see a Richard/Kahlan video, or a Daniel/Sha're video.

This one on Sephiroth and Aerith from Final Fantasy VII is an interesting way to frame the story from Advent's Children.  After all it really is their story isn't it.

Legend of the Seeker Season 2 and the Books

craig-hornerIn an interview with Unification France, Craig Horner casts some doubt over whether Season 2 of the Legend of the Seeker will continue the story from book 2: The Stone of Tears.

The following is translated by Google Reader from the original french found at Unification France:
When asked what will be like season 2, Craig Horner plays Richard Cypher / The Seeker (the dowser) replied: "I do not know if they will follow the second book in the series (The Sword of Truth , Volume 2: The Stone of tears), because they have already used the 1st Volume, but also characters and stories of other volumes. Now that the series took the autonomy compared to the original, you can do what we want. "

While this is not a "Yes, we will be leaving the books behind," but it is a little concerning.  I would hold the cast and crew would be in the loop regarding how much they will or will not follow the path set out in the novels.

I assume they will use the books as a source for characters and setting as well as the general twists and turns for each season's plot arc.  That is essentially what they did with season 1.

I am just thrilled that to be speculating about season 2, and by the way, apparantly in french, Richard is the Dowser (le Sourcier).  That is kind of cool.
