Tech Wolf brought over Role Models this past weekend and we really enjoyed it.  I would give it a 9 out of 10.  A definite owner with plenty of rewatchability.

This is a great movie about fandom, passion and embracing that which makes you happy in life no matter what others might think.  Add in KISS to the mix and it rocks! 

It brought back fond memories of when I hung out with members of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and battled in arms with them.  It also brought back the nights of the Vampire LARP (Live Action Role Playing).

WTF Gene, I mean WTF!  In another spot:

Adam should have won. On the other hand he should have kept his mouth shut about his sexual preferences. I don't really care what he wants to do and neither does America. But this kid's got talent, Adam Lambert can go on. As long as he's quiet about whatever else he prefers to do indoors. I personally don't care, I mean if you love farm animals, that's fine, but I don't wanna read a magazine about that (AfterElton).

I am a huge Kiss fan.  My sister became a fan when Rock and Roll over came out, and I grew up with their music.  It has been the sound track of my life.  I own all their albums, most of their DVDs and have seen them in concert a couple times.  When I was 16, my sister took me to see Kiss as my first concert.

Now, I have to admit that I have never been the biggest fan of Gene Simmons.  He has suffered from foot in mouth disease for decades, and he has one of those personalities that has always made me roll my eyes.

This is blatant hypocrisy!  Gene's entire career is based around him talking about his sexuality, sexual preferences, and sexual activity.  Gene is the man who said, "If it's not about sex, its not rock and roll."  How dare he of all people say that anyone should shut up about their sexuality!

Adam has talent.

I don't think this quote is necessarily homophobic.  Gene is first and foremost a business man.  I assume that he looks at Adam's decision to come out as one that will hurt his ability to sell records.

As someone who has made a career off singing about his love of women, I can understand that.  Personally, I would love  a gay rock star who isn't afraid of wither his sexuality or an electric guitar.

Boo Gene.  At least Paul Stanley is the one who is doing the majority of the work on the new Kiss album.

This weeks DVD releases brings us seven progressive speculative fiction movies and TV shows:  Afro Samurai: Resurrection, Death Note Movie II: The Last Name, Kiss: Resurrection, Tales from the Darkside: The First Season, Friday the 13th - The Series - Season Two, Dragon Ball Z: Season Eight (Babidi & Majin Buu Sagas), and Against the Dark.

• Afro Samurai: Resurrection:  The second season is out for this action-packed animated series.  I’m very curious to try this out and have heard great things about the series.   Samuel L. Jackson returns as the voice of the tortured titular character who learns that the body of his father has been stolen from its grave.  Afro and his sidekick, Ninja Ninja (also voiced by Jackson), set off a bloody trek through futuristic Japan to exact revenge.  Inspired by the work of manga artist Takashi Okazaki.


• Death Note Movie II: The Last Name:  The second live action movie based on the anime series which is based on the manga.  For more on the anime series and to watch it streaming online read: Death Note: Streaming Online Anime.  For more on the manga read: Review: Death Note.  In this live-action sequel to Death Note, the battle of wits between enigmatic detective "L" (Ken'ichi Matsuyama) and teenage vigilante Light (Tatsuya Fujiwara) escalates as Light infiltrates L's inner circle of investigators to divert suspicion away from himself. Meanwhile, popular television host Misa (Erika Toda) finds a second Death Note notebook and uses it to become Light's deadly disciple.


• Kiss: Resurrection:  This was a really good concert and worth checking out as a renter.   After ditching their makeup and costumes in the 1980s, rock band Kiss reformed in '96 with their classic look and style. Through this documentary's behind-the-scenes footage and candid interviews, explore this exciting period in the band's history. All four of the original members, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, return for this amazing reunion and show the world they still rock.


• Tales from the Darkside: The First Season:  This series was a pseudo knock off of Tales from the Crypt, that said this was an entertaining series and fun to watch.  I would highly recommend renting it.  A macabre anthology series features adapted stories by Stephen King, Clive Barker and other horror writers with eerie tales about a levitating boy, an endlessly ringing phone, an undead grandpa, a vengeful genie and a bookie whose life depends on a bet populate.


• Friday the 13th - The Series - Season Two:  This is a great show really enjoyed watching it and recommend renting it.  A supernatural mystery series where Johnny Ventura teams with Micki and Ryan in their endless quest to track down the cursed relics of Lewis Andredi, who forged an unholy alliance with Satan. Joined by ex-magician Jack Marshak, the gang pursues -- among other things -- a voodoo mask, John Wilkes Booth's makeup case, vampire bees and a hexed camera.


• Dragon Ball Z: Season Eight (Babidi & Majin Buu Sagas):  This is a crazy series that grows on you, for fans they already know this one is an owner, for non fans do yourself a favor and start at the beginning, rent it wait a while and you too will get sucked into this series.  Dragon Ball Z is great fun with copious amounts of super smashing action and humor.  This season contains the Babidi and Majin Buu sagas… lol like any one can “contain” Majin Buu.  Supreme Kai comes to Earth to help the Z fighters thwart villainous Babidi's evil plan to revive the monstrous Buu. As the epic battle unfolds, Goku, Gohan and the others must face the underworld ruler Dabura, and Vegeta makes the ultimate sacrifice to break free of Babidi's mind-controlling influence.


• Against the Dark:  This movie sounds so craptastic that if I were sitting on the couch flipping channels I would have to stop and watch this suspected train wreck of a movie… Let me set the stage bloodthirsty vampires wreaking havoc and our only savior Steven Seagal… ROFL.  On a slightly more serious side if you have seen this let me know how it was.

Life is not always easy.  Early on, I learned that I could find the catharsis I needed in music.  There are many songs that I use to vent various emotions, or even celebrate.  Luckily, certain songs have been with me at those darkest moments to pick me up and carry me through.

These are songs of defiance, strength, and hope.

5. Crucify by Tori Amos

What can I say about Tori Amos that her voice doesn’t.  I used to be one of those people who had to make everyone happy, even if it meant that I was miserable.  It was tearing me apart.  Inside, I was little more than broken glass jangling around, and then I found Tori.

I used to listen to this song on repeat.  I learned to stop Crucifying Myself, and to just stand strong regardless of whatever people might think about me.

4. Under the Gun by The Sisters of Mercy

This song will forever be with me.  For some reason, this is the song I turn to in times of chaos and confusion.  The refrain, “Are you living for love?” has become a mantra for me to keep me centered and going forward.

3. You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette

I will forever love Alanis Morissette for this song.  The first time I ever heard it was on one of those nights that just ended badly.

I had been dating this guy for years, and I really loved him.  He picked me up, and we went out for dinner and a movie.  We had a very romantic evening, and if it had ended there it would have had everything a perfect date should have.

As he drove me home, he broke up with me.  I was devastated, so I turned on the radio to end the awkward silence.  This is the song that came on the radio.  For the rest of the ride home, I just looked at him and listened to “You Oughta Know.”  I will forever love Alanis Morissette for that.

Kiss is one of my favorite bands for so many reasons.  One of the biggest has to be that in those darkest moments, I had this song running through my head.
