I, Frankenstein What Will The Movie Promise

Kevin Grevioux’s I, Frankenstein a Darkstorm Studios graphic novel will be made into a movie.  Production will begin in July of 2010 and Patrick Tatopoulos production designer from Underworld is attached to direct.

They described the movie as:
I, FRANKENSTEIN is a contemporary fantasy thriller in which the original monster of Victor Frankenstein stands between the human race and an uprising of supernatural creatures determined to overthrow the world.

This comes across to me as another monster turned savior tale like Hellboy.  It does not make it a bad sounding or good sounding movie.  What are the connections to Frankenstein and the mythical implications brought forth in the original tale?

Is I, Frankenstein just associated to it’s name sake as a patchwork man that Victor puts together to help save us?  Should we expect Frankenstein to ponder it’s existence and the reasoning behind why it was created?

That aside, I’m excited about the visual promise that is given to us with Patrick Tatopoulous involvement in the project.  He has demonstrated success in translating the gothic aesthetic in movies with his work on Underworld and gives me hope that the visuals will be awesome.

Hugo Nominations: The Picks Are Difficult

Get your copy of Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog here and help support the project The Hugo Awards nominations are out!  I was so thrilled when I saw that Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog was nominated for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.  This is great because they are recognizing web series along with television series.

Now comes the hard part… picking only one winner.  Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and two other top picks from the category is “Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead” (Doctor Who) and “Turn Left” (Doctor Who).  This is a very hard pick because I really want Doctor Horrible to win as recognition and validation of web series yet “Turn Left” deserves to win since it is the best dramatic presentation out of the three.

Some other categories with difficult picks.

Which one will you vote for?

See the full list of nominations here.

Del Toro and Hellboy 3

hellboy_p1_w434_h_q80 We have already discussed Guillermo Del Toro’s thoughts on The Hobbit (here), Frankenstein (here) and At the Mountains of Madness (here).
At what point could Hellboy III happen?

Del Toro: You know, I think that they will not green-light it or they will not talk about it until the last Euro hits the piggy bank. The fact is the movie, even though it was dually sodomized by Hancock and The Dark Knight, still did theatrically better than the first movie, internationally is doing exceedingly better than the first movie. It really is in some cases doing 300 percent more business, and, depending on the territory, globally, I think, is doing about 100 percent more business than the first one. Let's see what happens with the DVD, and the people that make the decisions do it based on the calculator function of the iPod, not on the other one (Scifi Wire).

I am not sure what he is talking about with the iPod thing their unless that is an oblique way of saying “bean counter” or “corporate shill.”  I am excited to hear that the movie is doing well, though I am not sure why he used the word sodomized.

Strange word use aside, it will be interesting to see if the studios are capable of noticing a movie doing well on its own or if they will be blinded by the success of other films.
Would they wait for you, or would you let another filmmaker do it?

Del Toro: I would beg them and amputate myself in order for them to wait for me, but I don't control it. If they say, "No, no, no, we're going to do it," I personally think this incarnation of the trilogy I would love to finish, because it's not arbitrary that we went into a different direction on the second one. I really think when and if you see the three movies, you're going to have a comedic one, a tragic one, and you're going to see three movies that are incredibly apart in registration one from another. It's really exploring Hellboy in very different ways (Scifi Wire).

His passion is awe inspiring, and I would love to see what he wants to do with the third one.  I assume is he using the word trilogy in the modern sense of a three stories with the same characters and not three separate stories with an over arcing plot arc.

If there is an overarching plot arc, I missed it, but it is possible that a third installment would bring it to the fore.  I really don’t think there is one.
Would you remain part of it producing if you didn't direct?

Del Toro: I don't know. I mean, I don't know if I can. You know, I think producing, partially producing is being able to extricate yourself from the director. If you don't do that, you are not really producing. I don't f--k around with my directors. I don't tell them what to do. ...
In producing something like Hellboy, I don't think I would be objective. I really think it's a dangerous position, so maybe in the writing I would have a better handle, but I don't know if I could be involved to that degree. ... (Scifi Wire)

I understand what he is talking about.  I am not sure I could hand off a project that I was so emotionally and creatively tied to.  I have my doubts whether or not anyone could do as good a job as Del Toro, but then again, you never know.  One thing is certain:  If they replace Del Toro, the films will take a completely different direction.

DVD Releases: November11th, 2008

  • Blood Wars:  A vampire flick involving a war between warlocks and vampires.  The description made me curious.  I am a sucker for vampire flicks and that soft spot has led me to watch many bad movies and this may be another one my netflix rating gave this DVD a 1.8.  If any of you have seen this let me know should I rent it? Do you think I would like this movie?

  • Dragon Ball Z: Season Seven:  This animated show is so addictive with over the top fight scenes coupled with a delightful sense of humor.  A definite owner which will sit nicely next to my other Dragon Ball Z box sets.

  • Hellboy II: The Golden Army:  This movie was great with breathtaking setting, and brilliantly written story line.  It did the Hellboy comic’s justice and a definite owner for me.  For more on Hellboy and my full review read Exploring: Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

  • Slipknot: Rank Outsiders:  This documentary of the metal band Slipknot contains: rare performance footage, exclusive interviews, contributions from friends, colleagues and other associates, location shoots, news reports, seldom seen photos and a host of other features.  Love the band.  As a maggot I'm going to have to check this one out.

  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars:  This was an amazing piolit that got released to the theater I have been eagerly awaiting the release of The Clone Wars on DVD and now I can own it and add it to the rest of my Star Wars DVD.  For more on The Clone Wars and my full review read Reviewing The Clone Wars A Theatrical Pilot.

Del Toro, The Remake Machine

What is Guillermo Del Toro doing for the next ten years?

The Hellboy director will remake Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five (BBC NEWS)

A part of me is very excited that Del Toro has signed a deal with Universal, but I am a little upset that he will be trapped in a pit of remakes instead of making the brilliant original films that made us fall in love with his work in the first place.

I feel guilty saying this, but I cannot wait to see the movies...
