Journey to the West Movie

I don't want to let myself get too excited about this, but Journey to the West may be made into a new movie with Neil Gaiman writing, Del Toro directing, and James Cameron advising... maybe on FX?

Journey to the West is the iconic Chinese story of the monkey king, Son Wukong, and his many adventures.  Most of us are at least familiar with the story through its adaptation into the original Dragonball.

I fell in love with the story when a Korean friend of mine introduced me to it when I was in middle school.  My friends and I used to sit around and listen to him recounting the story.

Should this movie happen, YAY, if not, it is only a matter of time until someone makes it.

David Yates Hobbit Directing Rumor

Guillermo del Toro noted that John Howe's illu... Image via Wikipedia

Yates' name has been mentioned on industry insider tracking boards as the top choice to take the reins from Guillermo del Toro

I like many fans want to see a big screen Hobbit movie.  This hope is not lost jut put on hold until MGM can resolve their financial issues.

David Yates could handle directing a Hobbit movie.  He could even do a great job at it but that is not the real question.

Will he do it?  Probably not at this point in time.  Since Guillermo del Toro walked away from a project that he loves because of the delays I don't see any big name director picking this up until MGM resolves their first obstacle.

Theater or Renter: June 2010

Theater or Renter: June 2010 includes 6 SF movies Marmaduke, Splice, The A-Team, The Karate Kid, Toy Story 3, Jonah Hex.  Will we watch? Will we rent? or do we even care?

Rules of the Game: Watch the trailers. Rate the Trailer. Then share with us your comments: does the movie, it’s trailer and buzz make you want to watch it in the theater, rent it, or not interested at all, and why?

Marmaduke:

Release Date:  June 4th 2010

Listed as:  Fantasy, Family

Studio:  20th Century Fox

Director:  Tom Dey

Produced by:  John Davis, Tom Dey

Written by:  Vince Di Meglio, Tim Rasmussen

Stars:  Owen Wilson, George Lopez, Fergie, Kiefer Sutherland

The Plot / Story: Based on the comic strip of the same name by Brad Anderson.  The Winslow family moves from the country to Orange County, California and has to adjust to the new environment.  This is particularly difficult for the lovable yet awkwardly large Marmaduke, who tends to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way.(Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

Marmaduke is a renter at best for me.

Positive

It has a good cast.  The trailer made me laugh at times.

Negative

I have concerns that it may be more kidsey then a family movie.  All of the early promotion materials gave me the impression this movie is more fluff.

Splice:

Release Date:  June 4th 2010

Listed as:  Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller

Studio:  Dark Castle Entertainment via Warner Bros. Pictures

Director:  Vincenzo Natali

Produced by:  Steve Hoban, Guillermo Del Toro

Written by:  Vincenzo Natali, Doug Taylor, Antoinette Terry Bryant

Stars:  Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac

The Plot / Story: Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named “Dren”, the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators – only to have that bond turn deadly.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

Probably theater definitely renter.

Positive

Guillermo Del Toro.  Premiered at Sitges Film Festival winning Best Special Effects and Best film.  Also had a showing at Sundance and was then fought over by several studios in a bidding war to get distribution rights.  The trailer looks very interesting.  and Guillermo Del Toro.

The A-Team:

Release Date:  June 11

Listed as:  Action, Adventure

Studio:  20th Century Fox

Director:  Joe Carnahan

Produced by:  Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Jules Daly, Stephen J. Cannell

Written by:  Joe Carnahan, Brian Bloom, Skip Woods, Michael Brandt, Derek Haas

Stars:  Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson, Sharlto Copley, Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, Brian Bloom

The Plot / Story: (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

I'm on the fence if this will be a theater or a renter for me.  This is a niche movie that will probably have a limited appeal with the chance of also attracting the action movie going audiences.  I grew up watching A-Team on TV.  I loved what they stood for:  justice and helping those in need.  I can only hope those elements are in the movie.

Positive

The casting looks the part.  Trailer impressed me, it looked good and has a very A-Team feel to it.  Derek Haas did a good job with wanted so hopefully he brings some of those elements to this project.

Negative

Initially I thought a movie of this was a bad idea but after watching the trailer that has changed.  The Loosers was so disappointing that it has left great concerns for the A-Team which is a similar style of movie.

The Karate Kid:

Release Date:  June 11

Listed as:  Action, Drama, Family

Studio:  Columbia Pictures

Director:  Harald Zwart

Produced by:  Jerry Weintraub, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz

Written by:  Christopher Murphey

Stars:  Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson

The Plot / Story: This is a remake of The original Karate Kid The Karate Kid Remake Trailer.  A 12 year old Detroit kid moves to China with his mother.  Due to cultural differences he makes the class bully and enemy.  With no friends, in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu. Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

Skeptical of the remake, I have concerns that those values from the original will not be maintained.  I may have to wait for early reviews before I can make a decision on whether I will even watch it.

Positive

Loved the original film.

Negative

Concerns over how they will keep some of the spirit of the original film due to some of the fundamental changes.

Toy Story 3:

Release Date:  June 18th

Listed as:  Fantasy, Family

Studio:  Pixar Animation Studios

Director:  Lee Unkricha

Produced by:  Darla K. Anderson, John Lasseter

Written by:  Michael Arndt

Stars:  Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Wallace Shawn, Blake Clark, Jodi Benson, Michael Keaton, Ned Beatty, John Morris

The Plot / Story: Andy is now heading off to college and plans to put the toys into storage in the attic but his mom accidentally donates them to the Sunnyside Daycare.  Woody, Buzz and the whole gang meet new toys at the daycare for better and worse. Learning of Andy's sadness over their loss they must fight to find their way back to Andy's house before he leaves for college.(Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

Theater

Positive

Really enjoyed the previous 2 Toy Story Movies.  The cast is stellar.   Trailer looks good.

Jonah Hex:

Release Date:  June 18

Listed as: Superhero, Westeren

Studio:  Legendary Pictures, DC Entertainment

Director:  Jimmy Hayward

Produced by:  Akiva Goldsman, Andrew Lazar

Written by:  Screenplay: Neveldine & Taylor  Story: Neveldine & Taylor, William Farmer  Characters: John Albano, Tony Dezuniga

Stars: Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon

The Plot / Story: Jonah Hex is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone... and anything. Having survived death, Jonah's violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the "other side." His only human connection is with Leila, whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. But Jonah's past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military makes him an offer he can't refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop the dangerous villian Quentin Turnbull. But Turnbull, who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell, is also Jonah's oldest enemy and will stop at nothing until Jonah is dead.(Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

First Impressions:

On the fence between theater and renter.

Positive

John Malkovich a plus.  Superhero movie a plus.  The steamPunk elements borrowed for the film it makes for a more fantasy version of the Wild West but one that I enjoy.

Negative

The trailer was not terribly exciting border lining on the boring.

The Hobbit film Looses It's Director Guillermo del Toro

Director Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth,... Image via Wikipedia

Director Guillermo del Toro quits The Hobbit film over production delay.
"In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming The Hobbit, I am faced with the hardest decision of my life," del Toro told a "Lord of the Rings" fan website.

"After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien's Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures," he said, noting the film still hadn't been given the green light by MGM, the struggling Hollywood studio.

He is not totally leaving the project behind.  del Toro plans to continue working with Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh on the screenplay.

It's a sad blow to the film but I understand where del Toro is coming from.  He has many other projects to work on.

Don't think of this as a delay on the project.  Think of The Hobbit project as a back burner movie project, or a nice theoretical project.  It will stay as such until it gets both a solid screenplay and the green light aka funding.  Only then will it have the chance to move forward.

Del Toro and Hellboy 3

hellboy_p1_w434_h_q80 We have already discussed Guillermo Del Toro’s thoughts on The Hobbit (here), Frankenstein (here) and At the Mountains of Madness (here).
At what point could Hellboy III happen?

Del Toro: You know, I think that they will not green-light it or they will not talk about it until the last Euro hits the piggy bank. The fact is the movie, even though it was dually sodomized by Hancock and The Dark Knight, still did theatrically better than the first movie, internationally is doing exceedingly better than the first movie. It really is in some cases doing 300 percent more business, and, depending on the territory, globally, I think, is doing about 100 percent more business than the first one. Let's see what happens with the DVD, and the people that make the decisions do it based on the calculator function of the iPod, not on the other one (Scifi Wire).

I am not sure what he is talking about with the iPod thing their unless that is an oblique way of saying “bean counter” or “corporate shill.”  I am excited to hear that the movie is doing well, though I am not sure why he used the word sodomized.

Strange word use aside, it will be interesting to see if the studios are capable of noticing a movie doing well on its own or if they will be blinded by the success of other films.
Would they wait for you, or would you let another filmmaker do it?

Del Toro: I would beg them and amputate myself in order for them to wait for me, but I don't control it. If they say, "No, no, no, we're going to do it," I personally think this incarnation of the trilogy I would love to finish, because it's not arbitrary that we went into a different direction on the second one. I really think when and if you see the three movies, you're going to have a comedic one, a tragic one, and you're going to see three movies that are incredibly apart in registration one from another. It's really exploring Hellboy in very different ways (Scifi Wire).

His passion is awe inspiring, and I would love to see what he wants to do with the third one.  I assume is he using the word trilogy in the modern sense of a three stories with the same characters and not three separate stories with an over arcing plot arc.

If there is an overarching plot arc, I missed it, but it is possible that a third installment would bring it to the fore.  I really don’t think there is one.
Would you remain part of it producing if you didn't direct?

Del Toro: I don't know. I mean, I don't know if I can. You know, I think producing, partially producing is being able to extricate yourself from the director. If you don't do that, you are not really producing. I don't f--k around with my directors. I don't tell them what to do. ...
In producing something like Hellboy, I don't think I would be objective. I really think it's a dangerous position, so maybe in the writing I would have a better handle, but I don't know if I could be involved to that degree. ... (Scifi Wire)

I understand what he is talking about.  I am not sure I could hand off a project that I was so emotionally and creatively tied to.  I have my doubts whether or not anyone could do as good a job as Del Toro, but then again, you never know.  One thing is certain:  If they replace Del Toro, the films will take a completely different direction.

Del Toro At the Mountains of Madness

mountainsofmadness We have already discussed Guillermo Del Toro’s thoughts on The Hobbit (here) and Frankenstein (here).
With regard to At the Mountains of Madness, I'd love to see you tackle H.P. Lovecraft in a way that hasn't been done.

Del Toro: Me too. Me too. ... Part of the arrangement with Universal--in being essentially there for now until 2017--part of the arrangement was they would finance research and development for Mountains of Madness. And we are doing it. There are many technical tools in creating the monsters that don't exist, and we need to develop them. The creatures, Lovecraft's creatures, the tools that exist for CG and the materials that exist for makeup effects, you need to push them to get there, and we're going to push them (Scifi Wire).

If you have read any of H. P. Lovecraft’s books, then it is easy to see what Del Toro is talking about.  All of Lovecraft’s creation are like anything that has ever been done in a film before.  If you have ever seen any of the films based on any of Lovecraft’s books, then you know how far from the originals they have gone away from the originals so they could make them producible for the big screen.
What is the effect you want to get?

Del Toro: Well, the fact that the shape-shifting implicit in the novel and implicit in the creatures, ... if you think in technical terms, digitally, that means normally you generate, for example, one model per creature. If you talk about shape-shifting to the degree that these creatures do, then you're talking about, essentially--if you're using traditional tools--you're going to need to generate 30, 40 models fully rendered per creature. That's, A, limiting and, B, incredibly expensive. So what we are trying to do is we're developing sort of a Swiss-army-knife approach to modeling. The details are going to be evolving, but it's almost like a Chinese box approach to the models, where we can encase one model on another one and make them modular. And the tools that we need for that to be fluid don't exist. We're going to need to write digital code we need to develop, the way Peter [Jackson] had to develop software for Lord of the Rings. ...

It took so many movies to develop intelligent fire software to the point where Peter could render the Balrog or to develop Massive software to do the crowds in Lord of the Rings. By the same token, we're going to need to develop a new tool that will be. We are thinking of calling it the Howard. For Lovecraft. ... (Scifi Wire)

I think they made major strides toward Lovecraft style creatures in Hellboy 2, but there is a long way to go before our rendering capacity catches up with his imagination.  If anyone can make this happen, it would be Del Toro.  He has the clout and the creativity to do it.
